Blue Mountain 10/1/2026 I decided on a solo hike last minute to this little gem located near Blue Mountain Lake. I've hiked it once before many many years ago and had fond memories of the view from the summit and fire tower. Of course as you will see , it was socked in on this day, but it was good to get out in the woods and get some exercise.
I got a fairly early start and was at the trailhead by 8:25. The short 2 miles to the summit reminded me that it was probably going to be steep. The only memory I had was that there was a lot of bare rock surface on the trail up high.
It starts off very nice and wide (and flat) in the beginning. I knew
this wouldn't last.Very quickly the trail becomes like most Adirondack trails with boulders and roots to navigate. ![]() The woods were very calm as well. I was only the 3rd car in the lot when I started and the recent rain and misty fog made everything seem very quiet.
These are always welcome .... except when they are wet, tread carefully.Stairs are welcome as well when things start to get steep ![]()
Good place to stop for a water break and snack
![]() About this time in the hike, less than 1/3 of the way, it just gradually gets steeper and never really let's up until you summit. There are no scrambles or super steep sections to contend with like Snowy Mt., but it's steep enough to give you a good workout the whole way. Here's the bare rock I remembered, you can also see that I was entering the clouds and knew that the summit was probably socked in.
![]() Well, this is convenient
![]() I think I summited in about 2 hours, I took my time on this trip, first hike of the year and all. As expected, I was in a cloud. I hung out for a while and enjoyed my lunch hoping that it would blow off, but it never did.
![]() All in all, this was a very nice hike, I enjoyed some solitude and of course the peace that comes with being in the woods. |
