Mt. Adams - 08/31/2019 |
|||||
Mount Adams is accessed from the Upper Works road, specifically the
East River trail-head. Located slightly south and west of the high
peaks proper, to say the view from the fire tower is amazing would
be an understatement. It's sandwiched between Santanoni Peak and
Allen Mountain. True wilderness!
At 3520, with only a 2.5 mile trek to the summit, it would seem like a very easy-moderate hike, but this little mountain proved to be worthy climb as you gain almost all of the nearly 1800 feet of ascent within about a 1.2 mile push to the summit. Early in the hike, the East River trail-head crosses the mighty Hudson River close to it's source. Shortly after we crossed the Hudson, we skirted Lake Jimmy. This made for a really great photo as the morning sky reflected nicely. After going around Lake Jimmy, the next landmark is the old cabin, the turn off for Adams Mountain would be about 100 yards beyond here. As I mentioned earlier, the final ascent is fairly steep and it starts rather quickly once you make the turn off. The wet rocks would also add to our challenge today. As the trail gets a little "technical", Duane is smiling in this picture, but I think he scowled at me first :) The trail just continues to get steeper and is unrelenting with only a few flat spots to allow you to catch your breath. We would not be denied however and before too long we were on the summit. It was well worth it too! The views from the fire tower are amazing with many of the 46 giants in sight. The top banner on this page is from the tower. All in all it was a great day, and since this hike, Duane has been on a mission to get back into this great hobby, I'll get him on a high peak before too long. Back to Top |
